After staying in Silver City at a KOA compground for the night we started a long drive towards Truth and Consequence (Yes, that's the name of a town) and then up to a place called Margarita. T and C was very dissapointing so we kept driving towards a place called Elephant Butte Lake. This was a huge lake with a very symbolic and scenic mountain in the middle. It was however a bit of a challenge to get there since our GPS got confused due to loss of reception and kept taking us around in circles. After taking in the scenery at Elephant Butte our plan was to stay in a free campground in Margarita, but when we got to the campground it felt a bit unsafe. On our way from the campground we talked about the cattle grids they have on the smaller roads in the US, so that their cattle won't escape. We thought it was annoying that these grids were everywhere and that we had to slow down now and then, there weren't even any cattle around us. So we thought, and a millisecond after we said this a horse was standing in front of us in the middle of the road. It walked towards us and stopped by Josh's window as if he wanted to ask us for the way, expecting Josh to open his window. We laughed and kept driving. So now we decided to head towards a place called Pie town (YES! PIE!) and then sleep in a small town called Grants in order to gain some time. Pie town was a really small town and we only saw a couple of derelict houses and cars. But what we also could see were two fully active cafés selling pie. Basically, this was their main dish. And the marketing was already taken care of in the town name. Apparently they didn't use to sell pies here until a woman came and took matters in her own hands. She started a café selling her homemade pies and called the place the Pie-O-Neer and this is where we stumbled in, hoping they wouldn't be closed by the time we got there. It was our lucky day because they were actually closed but kept it open since they had a couple of pieces of pie left. Luckily for them (and us) no pies had to go in the bin that day. There were only two flavours left to chose from so we tried both - Apple and coconut/lime. I am not a big pie fan, unless it is blueberry, but these were probably the best pies I've ever tasted. The apple pie was amazing with caramelized brown sugar on top of the crust. The two women working in the café were really nice and even though they were busy planning for upcoming "Pie festival" (which I hope we could have gone to!) they served us coffee and asked about our trip and where we were from. A local guy came in a couple of minutes later just having a chat with all of us. Pie town was a pleasant little place, at least during the half hour we stayed there.
